Description:

This course provides intensive Chinese language training and internship opportunities in China. Students will take Chinese classes 20 hours/week, and intern in a Chinese company or institution for 10-15 hours/week. Placement of internship will try to match students' field of study, skills and interests, and cover a wide range of sectors such as marketing, finance and banking, real estate, engineering, tourism, NGOs, education, media and publishing. Students will typically have four hours of language classes in the morning (two hours of instruction and two hours of drills), and be paired up with Chinese college students, who will serve as language partners and coordinators for internship in the afternoon. The language training is embedded in the Chinese setting, amounting to one semester of classroom learning at the Northeastern University. We will engage in dialogues with leading business people, scholars, government officials, journalists and students. Students also have the opportunity to spend time on weekends with host families to experience the daily lives and customs of Chinese families. The program will be based in Nanjing, a historic city with long and influential history as the capital of six dynasties, and is only two hours away by train north of Shanghai. We will visit Chinese and multi-national companies, historic and cultural sites in Beijing, Shanghai and Nanjing, and a rural village in Anhui province.
