Course description:

The courses for this Dialogue will be taught on the campus of the University of Cape Coast in Cape Coast, Ghana-West Africa by Dr. Vanessa Johnson (Northeastern University) and Dr. Kwadwo Opoku-Agyemang (University of Cape Coast). Students will engage in understanding the history, culture and peoples of Ghana through the study of the art, film, music, dance, and literature of Ghana. They will interact with the faculty and students at UCC as well as with seasoned artisans and people of the community. Students will be required to reflect on their learning experiences through journals and daily reflection sessions. They will conduct independent research and collaborate on a problem-based service-learning group experience that will allow them to culminate their research, experiences and observations of Ghanaian arts and culture into a video documentary. Students will be responsible for researching, directing, writing, editing, interviewing, and producing the documentary.

Course credits: IAFU939 Dialogue of Civilizations: Globalization, Humanities and Cultural Studies (4 SH) and AFRU925 Ghana Arts and Culture (4 SH)

Cost of program: Most major costs will be covered by summer tuition. There may be an additional program fee depending on length of stay in-country, airline ticket prices, or other extra expenses. Students will be responsible for meals and spending money.

Application Process: Download the Dialogue of Civilizations application, enrollment form, and waiver form. Turn in the completed forms to Cynthia Rapp in the International Affairs Office, 270 Holmes Hall.
