Course Description: The purpose of this course is to familiarize students with the culture of Greece, from ancient times to the present. Students will attend lectures on Greek politics (Mediterranean, Balkan, and Island), culture (art, music, literature, film, theatre, media), and history (ancient and contemporary), and archaeology. In addition to the lectures, students will visit important historic sites in Greece including Athens, the Peloponnese, Rhodes, Santorini, and Crete. At these sites, students will go on tours to antiquities such as the Parthenon, Mycenae, Epidaurus, Delphi, Olympia, Sparti, Arkadi, Mystras, Knossos, etc. At other sites students will interact with local citizens, academics, and students from around the world, discussing issues common to them and controversies affecting the region. During the course, students will maintain a daily photo journal, write one term paper on a topic approved by the instructor, write two book reports, and engage in other projects assigned by the instructor.

All students will be REQUIRED to attend 3 orientation sessions throughout the spring semester.

Course Credits: CMN U306 International Communication Abroad (4 SH) and IAF U939 Dialogue of Civilizations: Globalization, Humanities and Culture (4 SH).

Cost of Program: Major costs for the program will be covered through Summer I tuition plus an additional surcharge (estimated between $750-$1000). Students will be responsible for paying for some meals as well as entrance fees for some sites. Students should expect to spend $800-$1500 while in-country, depending on their personal spending habits. Financial aid is applicable, so contact your financial aid advisor.

Application Process: The program is open to students of any major. Download the Dialogue of Civilizations application, enrollment form, and waiver form. Turn in the completed forms to Cynthia Rapp in the International Affairs Office, 270 Holmes Hall.
