Course description:
Principles, practice, and policy for sustainable design of buildings and urban transportation systems, with American and European perspectives. Resource-efficient site planning, building systems, and construction. Current issues and practices, including LEED project certification and knowledge needed to become a LEED Accredited Professional. Transportation planning, facility design, and policies for promoting walking, bicycling, transit use, and developing sustainable and livable cities. Taught in study-abroad format with site visits showcasing European sustainable design practice.
The course will be based in Delft, a city of 80,000 people between Rotterdam and the Hague, and less than 45 minutes by train to Amsterdam, Leiden, and Utrecht. Students will be expected to create a photo journal and to complete a design project in either building or transportation facility design.
Course credits: IAF U938 Dialogue of Civilizations: Globalization and Social Sciences (4 SH) and CIV U556 Sustainable Design of Buildings and Urban Transportation Systems: American and European Perspectives (4 SH). For students in Civil Engineering, CIV U556 counts as a Technical Elective.
Cost of program: Most major costs will be covered by summer tuition. There may be an additional program fee depending on length of stay in-country, airline ticket prices, or other extra expenses. Students will be responsible for meals and spending money. Financial aid is applicable, so contact your financial aid advisor.
Application Process: The program is open to students of any major. The only prerequisite is the ability to do simple quantitative analysis using a spreadsheet. Download the Dialogue of Civilizations application, enrollment form, and waiver form. Turn in the completed forms to Cynthia Rapp in the International Affairs Office, 270 Holmes Hall. Students will be interviewed by the faculty leader as part of the application process.
